Fall is a Great Time for Family Photos

What a great weekend filled with all sorts of photography, including a super fun family portrait session.  It was an overcast day, but still a wonderful time to create portraits.

The shoot was a team effort... Little Avery provided the cute, my 8 year old tended the light stand and my 5 year old generated smiles with two turkey feathers he found.  I think that was generally at my expense, but I'm not sure... I was looking through the viewfinder.

Years in the Making!

I drove a bunch of miles today with my camera in tow, but my favorite images of the day were made early and close to home.  There's a small mill pond in the village of the town I live in and the Cold Brook flows over the damn creating a really nice, wide waterfall.  I've looked at this brook for literally years and today I finally climbed down into the gully to make a photo.  It isn't exactly what I had visualized for all that time.  As it turns out there are saplings growing near the base of the falls that aren't real attractive.  So, I pulled back and made this image instead.

The overcast day was perfect for shooting this scene as it evened out what otherwise would have been harsh, inconsistent light with too much contrast and dynamic range.  Now I can't help but think about what it would look like in winter.

An Autumn Sunset

Tonight was a fall evening to remember. And this is my favorite kind of photo... Spontaneous! Stop the car, run across the road and bound down the steep bank, through the woods, set a tripod and shoot!

Five from Fore! at the North Conway Country Club

Last week I did some photography at the stunningly beautiful North Conway Country Club.  It's such an amazing location right in the village of North Conway, but tucked away on the banks of the Saco with views to the Green Hills and the Moats.  Leslie and Tara did a great job modeling for the shoot and were troopers hustling around the course in the late day light and fighting off goose bumps the size of golf balls.

Over the years, I've wandered down unmarked and undocumented side trails many times.  Often the trail peters out in a dead end and there's nothing to see.  As a matter of fact, that happened to me yesterday when I had to bushwhack my way back to the road exploring Heath Pond Bog.  But today I found a special place with a sizeable set of cascades, cool pools and a fine forest.  Mid-day is no time for waterfall pictures so you'll have to wait for another time on those, but I liked this one well enough to share with y'all.  I'm anxious to go back!

One Morning in Our Nation's Capital

I left my hotel early and looking down New Jersey Avenue to my right, the dome of the US Capital building made the choice of which way to go pretty simple.  I headed off toward Capital Hill crossing streets easily as the morning commuters were yet to invade.  I made my way through a park, loosening up and picking up the pace.   Aside from other joggers, the police in the area were a noticeable presence.  I hadn't been to Washington in a couple of years and figured this was the new normal in town.

Soon I came to the Capital building and worked my way around to it's iconic steps.  I circled around the reflection pool before heading back to my hotel to get ready for work.  The light of the early day was beautiful and I made photographs with my iPhone along the way.

The time stamp on the first image shows 6:48 a.m.  Less than two hours later and just two miles away, there would be a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.  When I learned the news, I immediately thought of my children.  I then thought why do I ever leave them and my safe existence in quiet New Hampshire.  It was a weird feeling to be so close to such an evil and random thing.

I'm glad I made these images the morning of September 16th.  The Capital Building is an inspiring place.  Somehow, looking at them makes me feel better about my time in Washington.  The images make me feel that maybe our country has the strength and wisdom to sort out the problems we have.

The Beauty of Imperfection

The Panorama is way too wide, perspective is distorted and there are all sorts of artifacts from the four shots stitched together. But, I love it.
